How to choose a Hong Kong copywriter

06 Dec, 2020

I know, it’s tough.

As valued member of your advertising agency’s account servicing team – we’ve all been there. The client made a request, and there’s pressure to get the job delivered ASAP. You’re not a native English speaker and sometimes it’s just hard to tell if the Freelance Copywriter you’re considering is really a good fit. Here are some important things you need to consider when you are hiring a Freelance Copywriter in Hong Kong.

He or she should…

1. Have a proven copywriter portfolio

Before you engage with a copywriter, it’s important to make sure he or she has a copywriter portfolio to show you so that you can guage their abilities. No matter how rushed you are, ask for it. I’ve had clients give me the job without even asking for sample writing.

Key recommendation: Always ask for sample writing first.

2. Meet deadlines

There’s nothing like a freelance copywriter that causes grief for you and your team. You needed that piece of Facebook copy handed in by 3 pm sharp, but he/she doesn’t even have their phone on to answer your enquiries. Or, you’ve been left on read (gasp).

Key recommendation: Communicate deadlines and workflow before committing to hiring the freelance copywriter to ensure both parties are aligned on work.

3. Have a versatile tone of voice

I’ve been on the talent hunt myself for freelance copywriters, but there seems to be difficulty finding ones that have a versatile tone of voice. Not too long ago, I was looking for someone that could write for luxury hospitality – but we came up with nothing and ended up engaging with talent in Singapore instead (and of course, I wrote a lot of it myself).

Key recommendation: Ensure freelance copywriter is versatile enough to write for all types of brand voices.

4. Charge what they’re worth

Let’s be honest; you get what you pay for. Great copywriters in Hong Kong will charge rates commensurate with their ability and experience. Be weary of picking cheap labour or those who are willing to bend significantly to price negotiations.

Key recommendation: A higher fee is usually an indicator of quality, especially in Hong Kong. Copywriters that charge market rate are typically much higher quality.

5. Be a native English speaker and writer.

If you’re looking for an English copywriter in Hong Kong, chances are you’re looking for someone who’s native. Top-tier clients can spot great English copywriting from a mile away – so you should make sure the copywriter you hire is someone who has grown up in a foreign country such as Canada, the US or the UK.

Key recommendation: ensure copywriter is a native speaker to meet client needs.
